We hadn’t asked for any of this to happen. This wasn’t in our campaign road-map plan at all! I felt like the world was ending and there was nothing I could do about it.

To overcome this failure I stayed focused. I hashed out a plan of action with the amazing superwomen at change.org and my friends and family. We decided that if we could get one UK party leader to support us, we could get more. We lobbied other political parties extra hard into offering their support for our campaign. This worked! Political neutrality was restored and after team Remain joined our campaign, nobody connected us exclusively with the Leave vote any more. The world (and the campaign) was saved!

Even when circumstances feel out of your hands, remind yourself that things will get better. Trust in your friends, family and sister campaigners. Talk to them. They will help you to conjure up a plan of action!

In the meantime, connect with your supporters. You can explain your situation to them by posting an update (this is a key function of online petition sites, such as change.org. It involves sending an email out to everyone who has signed your petition – it’s amazing!). Your supporters will understand. They will be there for you. They are golden.

TIP 3. REMEMBER YOU ARE HUMAN

Above all, you need to remember that you are a human being. Succeeding as a strong feminist (or change-maker bossing it in any other sphere) does not mean you have to be superwoman every day of the week. You become no less awesome when something goes wrong. You’ll still be a badass change-maker and you’re still doing great things. None of that will change.

Having said that, if you do make a mistake and that makes you feel rubbish, that’s OK too. It’s natural to feel a failure. To get over this feeling make sure you look after yourself and remember that every time you fail you prove the issue you’re trying to solve is difficult! You prove that your issue is worth investing lots of time and energy into dealing with. Essentially, you legitimize your work. Even failing can strengthen your campaign!

You also need to remember that the world is an unpredictable place. Failures often won’t be your fault, nor will they be foreseeable, but you will be able to overcome them nonetheless. By believing in yourself and your abilities, you can turn failures into your strengths and ultimately, your successes.

TIP 4. IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT WINNING

This is perhaps the BIGGEST and most important tip I have to offer. Do not focus entirely on your one major end goal. Remember that there are other important accomplishments that you will achieve along the way to reaching your ultimate campaign finishing line. Sometimes, you will achieve these amazing things without even realizing!
